The Mosque Project

As we known, the Mosque plays an important role for all of Muslim’s activity. Mosques have not only played a vital and meaningful role as the focus of religious activities, but also as centers for social and educational programs. In addition, the mosque stands as an important build work of Muslim identity and community integrity.

Our own history proves that Mosque building is a basic foundation in forging the unity of the Muslim community. When Rasulullah migrated and arrived in Madinah (hijrah from Makkah to Madinah), one of the first things that he did was to build a Mosque, i.e. Nabawi Mosque. The azan and congregational prayers were established. At that time, beside its function as the main place for Muslim to serve Allah as His servants, the Mosque also became a place to make agreements, to make strategic war, da’wah, etc. Without the Mosque which gathers Muslims together, the ukhuwwah that is a religious duty cannot be achieved. Without the Mosque, Muslims cannot unite. The Mosque in Islam is a symbol of unity and progress of the ummah.

The Muslim population in Western Australia, particularly in the Bunbury district, is growing, and is expected to continue to grow in the coming years. Hence there is an urgent need and a strong rationale for a ‘place of worship’ to practice their faith, and to bring the community together. Since its establishment in Jan 1999, the association has distinguished itself with its large, broad-based multi-cultural membership base, community-oriented objectives and its deep-seated beliefs in Islamic norms and practices. The association’s leadership remains strongly committed to creating and fostering an all-inclusive environment where all Muslims will be able to practice the religion in accordance with the Quran and the Sunnah of the Prophet (SAW) (PBUH)

The Mosque Project Development Plan

The associations have detailed a plans to develop the mosque with a view to completing the project in increments, to accommodate funding constraints at each stage.

Based on the initial cost/budget estimates by the committee, the association’s initial, immediate funding targets are to build the mosque in three phases:-

Phase 1: To purchase a land for Bunbury Mosque (Masjid) and Community Centre (AUD 350,000)
We are currently undergoing a project to buy a piece of land. The Association are currently looking for a fund of AUD 350,000 to commence work to assist in place on buying a block of land.

We need funds to complete the project and our current shortfall is approximately around AUD 170,000

Phase 2:- To build the main building for Bunbury Mosque (Masjid) and Community Centre (TBA)
Association has plan to build a mosque (Masjid) to accommodate 300 congregate capacity  and a multi-purpose community complex.

The design intent of the Bunbury mosque and community centre is to create a showcase of Islamic architecture that represents Muslims from all over the worlds who are living in Bunbury, but which fits within its contemporary Australian context. Accordingly, the design seeks to incorporate traditional mosque planning and contemporary built form. The facilities for the first phase includes:-
  • Main prayer hall
  • Male ablution area
  • Female ablution area
  • Toilet
  • Car park
Phase 3:- To Extend the building with other facilities for Bunbury Mosque (Masjid) and Community Centre (TBA)
To facilitates the future religious, social, cultural and educational and other ancillary needs of a growing Muslim community in this city. The mosque to extend in terms of its function thus a development of its infrastructure need to commence for:-
  • Multi-purpose community hall
  • Classroom
  • Library
  • other ancillary facilities

Phase 1:- The purchase of land for Bunbury Mosque (Masjid) and Community Centre

Since 2010, the association has been working closely with the Shire to secure land on which to build a mosque including a community centre) in the Bunbury area. In Sept 2013, Alhamdulillah, and by the grace and blessings of Almighty Allah SWT, following its pro-active and determined efforts, The Association is happy to inform that we have signed the papers officially to buy on a block of land in Picton (on Coleman Turn) for AUD 350,000. Unfortunately as at September 2013, we have only have around AUD 80,000 and we are still having a shortfall of AUD 270,000 which need to be raise before December 2013.

This facility will help to meet the current religious, social, cultural and educational and other ancillary needs of a growing Muslim community in this city. The mosque to be built will be the first mosque in Bunbury.

Property Information:-

Property Type: Industrial Area

Land Size: - 3988 Meter square
Price: AUD 350,000.00

Location: Lot 94/0  Colemen Turn, Picton East, WA 6229

The propose property which is not far from Bunbury main town and only 20 minutes as per below route (according to Google Maps):-
  • Koombana Drive and Boyanup-Picton Rd (12.6 km, 16 mins)
  • Willinge Drive (13.3 km, 17 mins )
  • Boyanup-Picton Rd (12.4 km, 17 mins)
The reason this place was selected was because:-
  • The blocks mentioned above are very close to Bunbury and are situated in rural area so we have greater chances of success for Shire approval.
  • The cost is reasonable and we believe that it is achievable.
  • This block is extremely visual at the rear to Martin Pelusey Road, which will develop into the new Bunbury Outer Ring Road.
  • The distance is not a major factor as we will be at the footstep of new Bunbury Outer Ring Road. It will reduce the travelling time significantly for our Muslim brothers living in Eaton, Australind and Glen Iris.
  • The block is good sized and has the potential for future developments
  • We should put in application for Bunbury Islamic Cultural and community centre and Mosque will be a part of it. Our planners can accommodate that request as it will be financially beneficial for us to have complete plan in one go.

Phase 1.1:-Source of Finance to Purchase the Land

Since it is very expensive to buy the land and construct the building for the mosque. The estimated amount of money required is not less than AUS 700,000 for buying the land, build, equip and running a small mosque.

For the first phase of buying the land for the mosque which cost AUD 350,000. As at September 2013, the association have only has around AUD 80,000 and we are still having a shortfall of AUD 270,000 which need to be raise by December 2013.

Raising such huge funds for the entire project facility will be our main challenge and will be beyond the capability of the association members alone. The association therefore earnestly seeks the cooperation and generous support and financial assistance from all Muslim community to assist us in our first phase of the project to buying the land for our long-awaited place of worship (Masjid) for Islamic Association of Bunbury.

We currently sinking fund via:-

• Option 1:- Donation

We kindly request the Muslim brothers and sisters to give generous contributions.

• Option 2:- Loan
We kindly request the Muslim brothers and any Muslims association to provide with long term interest free loan.

We believe that the community will be coming forward and we should be able to get a reasonable amount to start the project then we can influence other sources after covering the difficult ground ourselves.

Phase 2:- The Mosque Plan

Association has plan to build a mosque (Masjid) to accommodate 300 congregate capacity  and a multi-purpose community complex.

The design intent of the Bunbury mosque and community centre is to create a showcase of Islamic architecture that represents Muslims from all over the worlds who are living in Bunbury, but which fits within its contemporary Australian context.
